Forgotten Shonen Jump Classic Makes a Comeback After 40 Years — Watch the First Trailer!

Shonen Jump’s

A long-lost gem from Shonen Jump’s golden era is officially making its grand return! Nearly 40 years after the original anime ended, High School! Kimengumi is getting a fresh reboot that’s set to hit screens next year — and the first trailer is already here.

Fans of classic anime have been feasting lately, with many old favorites getting anniversary reboots and special projects. And now, it’s time for Motoei Shinzawa’s High School! Kimengumi to join the celebration.

The Wacky School Squad Is Back

First serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump back in 1980, High School! Kimengumi started as a quirky comedy about a group of misfit students who always found themselves in hilarious trouble. The anime originally aired from 1985 to 1987 and ran for a total of 86 episodes — and it quickly earned a cult following for its wild humor and lovable cast.

Now, after four decades, the gang is back! The new High School! Kimengumi anime will premiere in January 2026, celebrating the manga’s 45th anniversary.

Meet the Team Behind the Reboot

The reboot is being directed by Kazuaki Seki, who’s previously worked on live-action projects, marking his first anime direction gig. The series is produced by Seven, with Takashi Nishikawa as animation director, Shigeru Murakoshi handling the scripts, and Yuka Abe designing the characters.

Music fans have something to look forward to too — Night Tempo will be composing new songs for the series, while Slow Curve is producing the project overall.

Star-Studded Voice Cast

The cast features some of the biggest voice talents in anime today:

  • Tomokazu Seki as Rei Ichido
  • Shunsuke Takeuchi as Go Reietsu
  • Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kiyoshi Shusse
  • Chiaki Kobayashi as Jin Daima
  • Kikunosuke Toya as Dai Monohoshi
  • Haruka Shiraishi as Yui Kawa
  • Ikumi Hasegawa as Chie Uru

It’s a massive revival for a series that’s been largely absent from the spotlight for decades — and fans are already buzzing about how the old-school humor will translate for a new generation.

A Look Back: What Is High School! Kimengumi?

Originally known as 3-Nen Kimengumi, the manga followed a group of eccentric middle schoolers in a special “Kimengumi” club, each with their own ridiculous quirks. When the story continued into high school, it became High School! Kimengumi, capturing even more absurd and charming moments in the boys’ daily lives.

Now, as this classic returns with brand-new animation and a modern team, both longtime fans and newcomers have something to laugh about.

Will Kimengumi’s offbeat comedy stand the test of time? We’ll find out this winter when the reboot premieres.
